NHS Treatments

  • Treatment that is clinically necessary to improve oral health (as assessed by your dentist) is available on the NHS.
  • This means that the NHS provides treatment that is required to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain.

Charges for NHS Dental Treatment

There are three bands of charges for all NHS dental treatments. The fees below are correct as of April 2025. Double-check the NHS website to confirm the latest fees.
Band Price
Band 1: Check-up, X-rays, prevention £27.40
Band 2: Above items plus fillings, extractions or root canals £75.30
Band 3: Above items plus crowns, bite appliances or dentures £326.70
Emergency appointments £27.40

What if I Need More Treatment?

If you require further treatment within two months of completing a course of treatment, such as another filling, and it falls within the same charge band or a lower one, you won't need to pay any extra. However, after two months, an additional charge for the relevant band will apply.

Emergency or Urgent Treatment

If you require urgent care, you only need to pay the Band 1 charge. Our dentists will carry out treatment to relieve your pain or stabilise your tooth.

Am I Eligible for Free NHS Treatment?

You can get free NHS dental appointments and treatment if:

  • you're aged under 18, or under 19 and in full-time education
  • you're pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
  • you've had a stillbirth in the past 12 months
  • you're getting treatment in an NHS hospital from a hospital dentist (but you may still need to pay for dentures or bridges)
  • you receive War Pension Scheme payments, or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme payments and the treatment is for your accepted disability

You can also get free NHS dental treatment if you or your partner receive certain benefits including:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
  • Pension Credit Guarantee Credit with Savings Credit
  • Universal Credit – but only if your income is below a certain amount

If you or your partner receive benefits that mean you can get free dental treatment from the NHS, your dependents aged under 20 can also get free dental treatment.

You can check your exemption on the NHS website.

NHS Dental Treatment Failure

If your NHS dental treatment fails within 12 months, your dentist will carry out any work needed to repair or redo the treatment free of charge. For example, if you have a filling that falls out six months later, your dentist will replace it for free.

However, if you need a different type filling or you lose or damage an appliance, or if it needs replacing due to wear and tear, you will have to pay the full cost of replacing it.
